Uma das mais belas recordações históricas de São Paulo, o Monumento à Independência, conhecido também, como Altar da Pátria, estará comemorando, nesse 7 de setembro, 99 anos. Em foi construído como parte das comemorações do Centenário da Independência do Brasil, em m1922. A linda e maravilhosa estátua, localizada às margens do riacho Ipiranga, no Ipiranga, onde D. Pedro I teria dado o grito da Independência admirada por todos tem, talvez, uma história conhecida por poucos. Ela surgiu de um concurso, organizado pelo estado, pedindo a participação de artistas brasileiros e estrangeiros que apresentaram diversos projetos e maquetes.
A polêmica em relação ao Monumento à Independência começou quando os finalistas foram apresentados no Palácio das Indústrias. Naquele momento os intelectuais brasileiro e parte da elite, fizeram várias críticas à realização do concurso. As críticas, consideradas à época mas como uma ação para marcar posição política, foram em função da participação de estrangeiros e até mesmo a composição da comissão julgadora dos projetos. Os ataques, porém, não inviabilizaram a realização do concurso e Ettore Ximenes, um artista italiano, saiu vencedor do concurso. Ele teve apoio do arquiteto, também italiano, Manfredo Marfredi. Sua obra, no entanto, não teve aprovação unânime da comissão que, para agradar aos críticos, pediu algumas alterações para inserir elementos representativos da história nacional.
Assim, o projeto inicial do artista italiano acabou sendo alterado para serem inseridos episódios e personalidades da história brasileira. Foi ai que acabaram sendo inseridos na obra lembranças da Revolução Pernambucana de 1817, a Inconfidência Mineira de 1789, as figuras de José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, Hipólito da Costa, Diogo Antonio Feijó e Joaquim Gonçalves Ledo, principais articuladores do movimento. Sua construção principal é feita de granito ornado com diversas estátuas de bronze que representam momentos de luta pela independência
Apesar de ter sido inaugurado em 1922, ele estava incompleto com a desculpa de que houve várias mudanças ao projeto inicial, o que teria provocado o atraso na conclusão da obra. Mas, aliviada a tensão e a pressão de parte dos intelectuais brasileiros e da elite, o Monumento à Independência foi finalizado quatro anos mais tarde, em 1926. Hoje faz parte do conjunto urbanístico do Parque da Independência, onde encontra-se também o edifício-monumento erguido em 1890, que hoje abriga o Museu do Ipiranga, além da Casa do Grito.
No interior do monumento, em sua cripta, está instalada a Capela Imperial, construída em 1952 para abrigar os restos mortais de Dom Pedro I, cujo restos mortais chegaram ao país em 1972, (embora o seu coração tenha ficado na Igreja da Lapa, no Porto), de sua primeira esposa, a imperatriz D. Leopoldina de Habsburgo, e também de sua segunda esposa, a imperatriz D. Amélia de Leuchtenberg, emn 1984..
Em setembro de 2022, quando será comemorado a Bi Centenário da Independência, com a entrega no novo Museu, o Monumento à Independência também tem um lugar reservado nessa história, por estará comemorando 100 anos.
