A Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) elegeu hoje (4) a atriz Fernanda Montenegro para a cadeira 17, na sucessão do acadêmico e diplomata Affonso Arinos de Mello Franco, morto no dia 15 de março do ano passado. Fernanda era candidata única à vaga e foi eleita por 32 dos 35 votos.O presidente da ABL, Marco Lucchesi, comemorou a eleição da dama do teatro nacional para a instituição. “É um momento importante, primeiro pela renovação que se dá com a eleição na Academia Brasileira de Letras. É um sinal de novos horizontes. Isso é sempre importante. Por outro lado, Fernanda é uma grande intelectual, uma representante importante da cultura brasileira. Ela já é parte do imaginário de nosso país e, de alguma forma, ela talvez nos obrigue a aumentar as cadeiras de 40 para 80. Se trouxer todas as personagens que amamos, vamos ter que dobrar o número de cadeiras [da ABL]. Então, vamos ficar com ela, que vale muito”, disse Lucchesi.
Os ocupantes anteriores da cadeira 17 foram Sílvio Romero (fundador), Osório Duque-Estrada, Roquette-Pinto, Álvaro Lins e Antonio Houaiss.
Permanecem vagas ainda as cadeiras 20, do jornalista Murilo Melo Filho, morto no dia 27 de maio de 2020; a 12, do professor Alfredo Bosi, morto no dia 7 de abril de 2021; a 39, do vice-presidente da República Marco Maciel, morto no dia 12 de junho deste ano; e a cadeira 2, ocupada pelo professor Tarcísio Padilha, que morreu no dia 9 de setembro.
Fernanda Montenegro, nome artístico de Arlette Pinheiro Monteiro Torre, nasceu em 16 de outubro de 1929, no bairro do Campinho, zona norte do Rio de Janeiro. Atuou em um palco pela primeira vez aos 8 anos de idade, para participar de uma peça na igreja. Sua estreia oficial no teatro, entretanto, ocorreu em dezembro de 1950, ao lado do marido Fernando Torres, no espetáculo 3.200 Metros de Altitude, de Julian Luchaire.
Na TV Tupi, participou, durante dois anos, de cerca de 80 peças, exibidas nos programas Retrospectiva do Teatro Universal e Retrospectiva do Teatro Brasileiro. Ganhou o prêmio de Atriz Revelação da Associação Brasileira de Críticos Teatrais, em 1952, por seu trabalho em Está Lá Fora um Inspetor, de J.B. Priestley, e Loucuras do Imperador, de Paulo Magalhães.
Mudou-se para São Paulo em 1954, onde fez parte da Companhia Maria Della Costa e do Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia (TBC). Com o marido, formou sua própria companhia, o Teatro dos Sete – acompanhada também de Sergio Britto, Ítalo Rossi, Gianni Ratto, Luciana Petruccelli e Alfredo Souto de Almeida. A estreia da companhia fez sucesso com a peça O Mambembe (1959), de Artur Azevedo, atraindo centenas de espectadores ao Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
Em 1963, estreou na TV Rio, com as novelas Amor Não é Amor e A Morta sem Espelho, ambas de Nelson Rodrigues. Nesse período, na recém-criada TV Globo, participou da série de teleteatro 4 no Teatro (1965), dirigida por Sérgio Britto. Em 1967, também integrou o elenco da TV Excelsior, interpretando a personagem Lisa, em Redenção, de Raimundo Lopes.
Ao longo da carreira, Fernanda participou também de minisséries como Riacho Doce (1990), Incidente em Antares (1994), O Auto da Compadecida (1999) e Hoje é Dia de Maria (2005).
Em 1999, Fernanda Montenegro foi condecorada com a maior comenda que um brasileiro pode receber da Presidência da República, a Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito “pelo reconhecimento ao destacado trabalho nas artes cênicas brasileiras”. Na época, uma exposição no Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM), no Rio de Janeiro, comemorou os 50 anos de carreira da atriz. Em 2004, aos 75 anos, recebeu o prêmio de Melhor Atriz no Festival de Tribeca, em Nova York, por sua atuação em O Outro Lado da Rua, de Marcos Bernstein.
Fernanda Montenegro completou 92 anos de idade no dia 16 de outubro. Considerada uma das melhores atrizes do Brasil, Fernanda foi a primeira latino-americana e a única brasileira indicada ao Oscar de Melhor Atriz por seu trabalho em Central do Brasil (1998). Foi, ainda, a primeira brasileira a ganhar o Emmy Internacional na categoria de melhor atriz pela atuação na série Doce de Mãe, da TV Globo, em 2013.
