“As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor” foi uma novela produzida pelo SBT e exibida de 6 de dezembro de 1994 a 8 de julho de 1995. Tendo como base o romance homônimo de Júlio Dinis, foi escrita por Lauro César Muniz e adaptada por Ismael Fernandes e Bosco Brasil, com direção de Nilton Travesso. A novela foi reprisada à tarde entre 7 de maio e 3 de agosto de 2007 compactada em 65 capítulos.
A trama focava os conflitos da aldeia de Povoa de Varzim, região do Minho, em Portugal. Após a morte de seu pai, Margarida, mais conhecida como Guida (Débora Bloch), vai viver com sua meia-irmã Clara (Luciana Braga), filha de sua madrasta. A madrasta morre e confere a educação das meninas ao Padre Antônio (Juca de Oliveira), o Senhor Reitor. A partir daí o Reitor começa a cuidar das duas mocinhas. Pedro (Tuca Andrada), um homem simples que trabalha no campo como seu pai, o Sr. José Das Dornas (Elias Gleiser), dono da fazenda mais importante da aldeia, é noivo da ambiciosa Clara. Guida, por sua vez, é a prometida de Daniel (Eduardo Moscovis), que voltou à aldeia graduado como médico, destituindo o posto do Dr. João Semana (Luis Carlos Arutim). Mas, o rapaz não se lembra de Guida, nem da promessa de casamento feita anos antes à jovem, assim como não se acostuma com a vida humilde da pequena aldeia. O Reitor se inspirará na natureza para proteger e cuidar de “suas flores” (Guida e Clara), utilizando sua sabedoria para controlar as incríveis confusões que surgirão.
O tema de abertura da novela era “Canção do Mar”, na voz de Dulce Pontes. O destaque da novela ficou por conta das três beatas fofoqueiras interpretadas por Ana Lúcia Torre, Cláudia Mello e Míriam Mehler. Valéria Alencar como a fogosa Francisquinha que tomava banhos no rio para aliviar seus calores obteve grande sucesso da critica e crescimento do seu papel. Daniela Camargo mesmo fazendo, a antagonista, Amália, conquistou o coração dos telespectadores quando sua personagem contraiu tuberculose, tendo uma morte trágica, no final da novela.
“As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor” foi a única novela de Eduardo Moscovis e Débora Boch fora da Rede Globo.
