A Abadia de Westminster localizada em Londres, na Inglaterra, é famosa no mundo todo por ser palco de celebrações da realeza britânica há séculos está prestes a aparecer na mídia novamente. A Igreja do Colegiado de São Pedro em Westminster, mais conhecida apenas como Abadia de Westminster, é considerada a mais importante de Londres e de toda a Inglaterra. É famosa mundialmente por ser o local de coroação do Monarca do Reino Unido. Entre 1546 e 1556 obteve status de Catedral e atualmente é uma “Royal Peculiar”, o seja, é um local de culto que está diretamente sob a jurisdição do monarca britânico, em vez de uma diocese. O conceito data do período anglo-saxônico, quando uma igreja poderia aliar-se com o monarca e, portanto, não estaria sujeita ao bispado da área. Mais tarde, ela refletiu a relação entre os Normandos e Plantagenetas e a Igreja.
O primeiro lugar de culto no local onde hoje se encontra a Abadia de Westminster foi no ano 616 após um pescador do Rio Tamisa ter tido uma visão de São Pedro. Na década de 970, São Dunstan da Cantuária fundou no local uma comunidade de Monges Beneditinos, mas só entre os anos de 1045 e 1050 é que foi construída a abadia em pedra pelo Rei Eduardo, o Confessor, que está enterrado na abadia. O templo foi consagrado em 28 de dezembro de 1065.
O Rei Henrique III modificou a Abadia, adaptando em estilo gótico anglo-francês, mas as obras só terminaram no reinado de Ricardo II. Em 1503, Henrique VII adicionou uma capela dedicada à Abençoada Virgem Maria.
Em 1534, Henrique VIII aprova o Ato de Supremacia pelo qual separa a Igreja de Inglaterra da Igreja Católica e entre 1538 e 1541 levou a cabo a Supressão dos Mosteiros na Inglaterra, País de Gales e Irlanda, confiscando as suas propriedades. Nessa altura, a Abadia de Westminster era a segunda mais próspera de Inglaterra, depois da Abadia de Glastonbury.
Durante o reinado da católica Maria I, a Abadia foi devolvida aos Beneditinos que voltaram a ser expulsos durante o reinado de Elizabeth I. Esta a transformou no Colegiado de São Pedro, diretamente dependente da Coroa e não do Bispado.
As duas torres da abadia foram erguidas entre 1722 e 1745 e projetadas por Nicholas Hawksmoor. Até ao Século XIX a Abadia era o terceiro estabelecimento de Ensino Superior da Inglaterra, após Oxford e Cambridge. Nesta Abadia foi concretizada a tradução de parte da Bíblia do Rei James.
Ao longo dos séculos tem tido um papel relevante na história da Inglaterra e do Reino Unido, como palco de inúmeras coroações e casamentos reais. Muitos monarcas britânicos e membros da família real estão sepultados na Abadia.
Lá está enterrado o corpo do famoso físico inglês Sir Isaac Newton e do escritor e naturalista britânico, autor da Teoria de Seleção Natural, Charles Darwin.
Os monarcas do Reino Unido têm sido consagrados na Abadia de Westminster desde a coroação de Haroldo II da Inglaterra, (exceto Eduardo V e Eduardo VIII que não tiveram cerimônia de coroação). Poucas vezes um monarca foi coroado fora desta Abadia, sendo que Henrique III não pode ser consagrado lá devido à tomada da cidade de Londres pelo Rei Luís VIII da França e teve de ser coroado na Catedral de Gloucester. Tradicionalmente, o monarca ao ser coroado toma assento no Trono de Eduardo, o Confessor, e quem preside a cerimônia é o Arcebispo da Cantuária. O Trono de Eduardo está no interior da abadia desde 1296, porém os reis da Escócia eram coroados na Pedra de Scone.
A Abadia de Westminster também mantém instituições de ensino: a Westminster School e Westminster Abbey Choir School. A ligação entre a Abadia e a educação remonta à época beneditina, quando o Papa exigiu dos monges que mantivessem uma escola de caridade em 1779. Os alunos da Westminster School, uma vez que foram autorizados a brincar na Abadia, deixaram suas marcas de bola no chão, que são visíveis até hoje. Atualmente os alunos da Westminster School utilizam a Abadia regularmente para concertos e apresentações.
Os sinos no Abadia foram renovados em 1971. O campanário atualmente é composto de 10 sinos confeccionados pela Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Além disso, existem dois sinos de serviço, feitos por Robert Mot em 1585 e 1598, respectivamente. A Abadia de Westminster professa a religião Anglicana.
