Se quando o Museu do Ipiranga foi inaugurado, em 1895, só havia chácaras na região do imponente edifício-monumento, passados mais de 120 anos o cenário é bem diferente. É no entorno do Museu que está o metro quadrado mais valorizado da região, hoje ocupado em grande parte por prédios residenciais e comerciais.
O crescimento do Ipiranga se deu muito por causa do Museu e o bairro é hoje um dos mais populosos da cidade de São Paulo. A região escolhida para a sua construção tinha o objetivo de assinalar o local onde ocorreu o “grito da independência” e associar a data de 7 de Setembro ao desenvolvimento da nação brasileira, sendo ainda uma demonstração do poder econômico de fazendeiros e empresários paulistas, que nesse momento ocupavam uma posição de prestígio junto ao governo central.
Por isso, ao longo das décadas, mesmo com o crescimento populacional acelerado e as mudanças urbanísticas da região, o prédio histórico continuou valorizado e preservado. No início do Século 20, o único imóvel que existia ao lado do Museu era uma casa que foi alugada para servir de residência a seu primeiro diretor, o alemão Hermann von Ihering. Formado em Medicina e Ciências Naturais, Ihering dirigiu a instituição entre 1895 e 1916.
Depois, em 1919, a ameaça à paisagem do Museu já era preocupação de arquitetos e urbanistas. Uma das prioridades relacionadas à urbanização do bairro com vistas às comemorações do 1º Centenário do Grito do Ipiranga, em 1922, por exemplo, foi a abertura da Avenida Independência (depois renomeada de Dom Pedro I), com mais de dois quilômetros de extensão. O objetivo era se permitir o que foi chamado à época de “descortino completo do edifício do Museu do Ipiranga e o realce desse belo e antigo edifício”. Assim, quem viesse da região central da cidade poderia avistar o monumento.
O temor com a visibilidade do Museu ficou ainda mais evidente antes dos festejos dos 150 anos da Independência, em 1972. Um documento da Secretaria de Cultura, Esportes e Turismo do Estado assinado por Lúcia Piza Figueira de Mello Falkenberg, presidente do Condephaat (Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico Arqueológico, Artístico e Turístico), fala sobre a preocupação de como estaria o bairro no futuro: “o avanço vertical de edificações mesmo antes do 2º Centenário poderá sufocar o restante da paisagem num anel de ferro e cimento”.
O receio era de que o Museu ficasse sufocado em uma “floresta de arranha-céus”. A construção do Hospital Ipiranga, um prédio com mais de dez andares, a poucos metros do Museu, por exemplo, foi criticada do ponto de vista paisagístico. Em 2007, o Conpresp (Conselho Municipal do Patrimônio Histórico de SP) aprovou projeto que limita a altura de prédios no entorno do Parque da Independência a até 10 metros, o equivalente a uma casa ou a um prédio de três andares. O objetivo é proteger a paisagem e evitar a descaracterização do bairro.
Nas últimas décadas, o Ipiranga deixou de ser um bairro operário, habitado por trabalhadores que vieram para a região atraídos pela farta oferta de emprego, e passou a se desenvolver como uma região de comércio e serviços.
