A produção conta a história da secretária Marion Crane, vivida por Janet Ligh, que após aplicar um golpe no dono da imobiliária na qual trabalha, foge rapidamente e, querendo esconder-se, se hospeda num decadente hotel, localizado fora da estrada principal. O estabelecimento é dirigido pelo tímido Norman Bates, papel de Anthony Perkins.
No decorrer da história, Marion decide tomar banho de chuveiro, mas é brutalmente assassinada a facadas pela mãe de Norman. Este episódio gerou a cena famosíssima, repetida inúmeras vezes quando o assunto é o filme, na qual aparece a personagem atrás da cortina do box e a aproximação do assassino empunhando uma faca.
Na verdade, Bates é perturbado mentalmente, guarda o corpo da mãe (que ele assassinou) no seu quarto. Bates usa as roupas da mãe para caracterizar-se como ela e depois comete os assassinatos.
“Psicose”, sem dúvida, é um clássico do gênero suspense e um dos melhores filmes de Hitchcock. No elenco estavam também Vera Miles, John Cavin e Martin Balsam.
