Ao comemorar 16 anos de operação no dia 8 de Março, com falhas pontuais e agora apresentando sérios problemas estruturais na Estação D. Pedro II, o Expressdo Tiradentes, que já foi Fura-Fila, e Paulistão, coleciona uma série de altos e baixos, no entando, nesse período, conseguir tirar mais de 100 linhas de ônibus do coração do Ipiranga, melhorando o transito e a qualidade do ar. O projeto ainda não atingia sua plenitude, pois transporta apenas 35 mil passageiros dia, número considerado baixo para um investimento alto.
Idealizado pelo então prefeito Paulo Maluf, o projeto surgiu em meados de 1995, com o nome de Fura-Fila, para garantir a eleição do candidato Celo Pitta, mas só teve suas obras iniciadas em meados de 1997 após o projeto ter garantido a eleição de Pitta.
A construção do corredor começou em 1998 na gestão de Pitta, e causou sérios transtornous à população do Ipiranga. Ele chegou a operar experimentalmente os primeiros 2,8 quilômetros em 30 de setembro de 2000 com três trólebus (dois articulados de prefixo original 8000 e 8001.No entanto, em 2001, toda a rede aérea do corredor (cerca de 8000 metros de fios para ônibus elétricos) foi removida, decretando o fim da operação.
A obra foi paralisada por muitos anos, mas depois retomada pela ex-prefeita Marta Suplicy, em 2002, com o nome de “Paulistão” usando veículos elétricos híbridos (VEH), e teve seu traçado estendido para chegar até São Mateus, mas foi novamente paralisada, com a avenida do Estado, no trecho do Ipiranga, sendo transformada num depósito de entulhos. As obras foram retomadas em 2005, na gestão de José Serra, rebatizado de Expresso Tiradentes. Finalmente, em 22 de fevereiro de 2007, o prefeito Gilberto Kassab entrega o primeiro trecho, operado totalmente pela Via Sul por ônibus articulados a diesel e 15 ônibus híbridos.
A operação comercial, no entanto, foi inaugurada no dia 8 de março pelo prefeito Gilberto Kassab. Hoje, 35 mil passageiros embarcam no Expresso Tiradentes diariamente. A maioria (83,3%), aprova o corredor exclusivo, com excelentes avaliações, de acordo com informações da SPTrans relacionadas à última pesquisa de satisfação, realizada em 2018. Sete estações compõem o Expresso Tiradentes: Pedro II, Ana Neri, Alberto Lion, Clube Atlético Ypiranga, Nsa. Sra. Aparecida, Grito e Dianópolis; e três terminais: Sacomã, Mercado e Vila Prudente.
O sistema viário faz integração física e tarifária com toda a rede de linhas de ônibus municipais, intermunicipais que atendem os municípios do Grande ABC e com a rede metroferroviária.
Desde sua inauguração, o Expresso Tiradentes mostra-se atrativo, por conta da redução de tempo de viagem da região sudeste de São Paulo com o centro, além de propiciara ligação aos passageiros provenientes das cidades do Grande ABC, com integração no Terminal Sacomã.
