O patriarca é Geraldo Bulhosa, interpretado por Alexandre Nero, que depois de rico passa a usar roupas caras e seu cabelo ensebado fica no passado. Muito humor, romance e crítica social é o que espera o telespectador. A produção já pode ser vista pelos assinantes da GloboPlay e os telespectadores da TV aberta ainda vão ter que esperar mais um pouquinho, pois a série só começará a ser exibida na Globo em setembro. Ambientada em 1822, após a independência do Brasil, “Filhos da Pátria” promete divertir o público com a história de Geraldo Bulhosa, um funcionário público do Paço Imperial, que estará imerso em um ambiente corrupto e, com isso, será influenciado a tomar atitudes desonestas em seu trabalho. Em meio a todos estes conflitos, o português também terá que lidar com os dramas de sua família, principalmente com os de sua esposa Maria Teresa (Fernanda Torres), uma mulher ambiciosa e muito vaidosa.
Um olhar crítico e bem-humorado sobre uma típica família de classe média no Brasil do Século XIX, pós-independência, e a formação da identidade do povo brasileiro conduzem o enredo da trama. O personagem protagonista, Geraldo Bulhosa nasceu em Portugal, é um homem de bem, solícito, prestativo por natureza, e trabalha no governo intermediando as relações entre Brasil e Portugal. Imediatamente após a Independência, ele começa a se sentir ameaçado de perder o cargo oficial que ocupa por ter nascido em terras lusas. Aos poucos, vai perdendo prestígio e precisará lidar com os “novos esquemas” que tomam conta do ambiente de trabalho.
