A rivalidade pelo controle do jogo do bicho no subúrbio carioca de Ramos foi o tema principal da novela “Bandeira 2”. A trama contava a história de Artur do Amor Divino, o Tucão (Paulo Gracindo), e Jovelino Sabonete (Felipe Carone), inimigos declarados, que foram surpreendidos pelo romance entre seus filhos, Thaís (Elizangela) e Márcio (Stepan Nercessian). Os dois bicheiros disputavam ainda o amor da taxista Noeli (Marília Pêra), porta-bandeira da escola de samba do bairro. Com ideias feministas, Noeli enfrentou preconceito por ser desquitada. No final da novela, Tucão é assassinado. A cena do enterro foi ao ar no capítulo final. Quidoca (Milton Moraes), o braço direito do bicheiro, ajudou a carregar o caixão, vestido exatamente como Tucão e assumindo o papel de seu herdeiro.
Todas as escolas de samba do Rio de Janeiro se candidataram para participar da novela. A escolhida foi a Imperatriz Leopoldinense, na época apenas uma pequena escola sediada em Ramos, onde se passava a trama. Paulo Gracindo foi a primeira escolha do autor Dias Gomes para dar vida à Tucão, embora a direção quisesse o ator Sérgio Cardoso para o papel.
O bicheiro Tucão teve imensa aceitação popular, inclusive entre os contraventores do jogo do bicho. Mas o sucesso não impediu que a Censura Federal exigisse a morte do personagem, sob o argumento de que o bem deveria triunfar sobre o mal.
A trilha sonora original de “Bandeira 2” incluía “Martim Cererê”, o samba-enredo composto por Zé Catimba e Gibi, da escola de samba Imperatriz Leopoldinense, para o Carnaval de 1972. Zé Catimba foi interpretado na novela por Grande Otelo. No disco, o samba foi gravado pelo próprio Zé Catimba, junto com a banda Brasil Ritmo.
De autoria de Dias Gomes e direção de Daniel Filho e Walter Campos, “Bandeira 2” foi exibida pela Rede Globo, no horário das 22 horas, de 28 de outubro de 1971 a 15 de julho de 1972, totalizando 179 capítulos.
