Terça-feira (26) foi celebrado o Dia Nacional de Prevenção e Combate ao Glaucoma e à Catarata para conscientizar as pessoas dos cuidados que devem ter com os olhos e sobre como agir em caso de identificação de alguma doença oftalmológica. E o alerta estende-se também aos donos de pets, já que essas enfermidades ocorrem com a mesma gravidade em animais de estimação.
Para o médico-veterinário Eduardo Pacheco, da Comissão Técnica de Clínicos de Pequenos Animais do Conselho Regional de Medicina Veterinária do Estado de São Paulo (CRMV-SP), todos os animais podem ter doenças oculares. As de origem genética são mais frequentes naqueles cuja criação não é controlada, como nos cães de raça pura de criadores irregulares. Shih-tzu, Pug, Lhasa Apso, Boxer, Bulldog e Boston Terrier são algumas das raças caninas que fazem parte do grupo com os maiores riscos de ter problemas oculares. Já em felinos, raças como persa ou exótico destacam uma propensão maior a ter tais complicações ao longo da vida, incluindo catarata, glaucoma, conjuntivite, úlcera de córnea, ceratoconjuntivite seca e doença das pálpebras. “Vale também lembrar que todos os animais, inclusive os sem raça definida podem desenvolver alguma lesão oftalmológica, por isso a importância de estar sempre atento”, avisa Pacheco.
E como identificar esses problemas nos pets? Pacheco explica que para saber se há alguma alteração deve-se observar as seguintes situações: aparecimento de secreções, desconforto nos olhos, alteração na coloração dos olhos, pupilas alteradas, secreção excessiva ou mudança no comportamento do animal. “Há alterações que não são visíveis para o tutor, por isso, é sempre indicado ir a uma consulta com médico-veterinário oftalmologista pelo menos uma vez ao ano”, orienta. De acordo com Pacheco, os tratamento podem variar de colírios e medicamentos via oral até uma cirurgia, dependendo do caso. “Os tratamentos oftalmológicos hoje em dia são muito efetivos, costumam ter um excelente prognóstico. Claro que em certos casos não é possível uma recuperação. Mas, por exemplo, é possível recuperar um animal de catarata com uma cirurgia. No geral o problema é corrigido, salvo em casos mais graves ou de trauma muito extenso”, explica.
