Ao se estabelecerem em 1625, os ingleses encontraram um território fértil e desabitado. A introdução do plantio da cana-de-açúcar, que contou com o incentivo inglês, trouxe consigo importantes mudanças sociais.
Em 1961, Barbados conseguiu sua autonomia interna e a independência em 1966. Por esse motivo, Barbados se tornou a ilha mais inglesa dentre todas as inglesas do Caribe. A nobreza dos gestos, o jeito de falar e a formalidade no trato com os turistas são alguns sinais dessa influência.
